Default Life is Work, Work is Life.

Life is Work, Work is Life.

Words: Tom Church

No matter what, the vast majority of us will have to work, fact. Earning money is a required action in order to gain the necessary and luxury goods we demand. However, many separate work and their lives.

You hear it all the time, "I can't be bothered to go to work tomorrow", "Still 4 hours left until my shift finishes" and "This work stresses me out". People have the tendency to divide the workplace away from their 'normal' lives. When with our friends, we'll talk about it almost as if it is a foreign land. How many times have you listened to someone excitedly say the words, "At work today..."?

Work is our life. It is not our whole life, but it is a huge part of it and it cannot be ignored, or shoved to the side. And to maintain a negative attitude over such a large portion of our lives (and consequently time) is a waste.

Employment is where we can achieve the most. Sometimes it is difficult to see this, because of money. In order to enter the workplace with positiveness, one must have ambitions other than money. After all, it's not money we love, it's the goods and services it enables us to gain.

Many make this mistake. They enter a job purely for the money, without thinking about what it will enable them to gain. For example, when I was 16, I gained a retail job which paid £7.50 per hour. I was happy at first because it meant I could afford to socialise more. I didn't need the money for anything else. However, after 9 months, I had too much money. As I didn't have any costs, other than socialising my money started to accrue in the bank. My ambition, or drive to work began to dwindle as I didn't need to earn more for the future (obviously, a lack of foresight here). Consequently, I quit my job.

Only when I needed more money (for a holiday - one month in Spain), did I get another job. As I have aged, my costs of living have risen (in correlation to my rise in independence), and my need for a job has increased.

However, at all my jobs, (and there have been a few), the happiest employees are those that are working towards something. Whether it's a promotion, greater knowledge, experience, a new car, traveling or university, they are the ones who wake up each morning and want to work hard. Those that are working, for the sake of earning money tend to be grumpy, and the least productive.

It is important to recognise, and accept that you may be in an unfufiling career. If you are not waking up, looking forward to going to work, if you come home, crash on the sofa and feel grumpy, or if you feel bored then you are not making the most out of your time. Work is your life. If you aren't achieving at work, then you aren't achieving in your life.

There are two rules for a truely satisfactory career:

1) Work towards something
2) Do something you love

Often the happiest employees are those that love their job. They don't care about the money, nor the hours. They'd happily work overtime, and quite often ask for it. These people (something I aspire to) work to make a difference. If their is a job you'd love to do, but can't find it, then start your own business! The rewards will be fantastic, there's no doubt about it.

Before you go to work next, ask yourself whether you can honestly say 'yes' to either of the two options. If you can't, then it's time for a change. If you know that you can work harder towards something, then do it. The more effort you put in, the greater satisfaction gained.

So true, Tom. Obviously the happiest employees are those who love their jobs... and sometimes we (or maybe just me ) need to learn to love our jobs first! i used to work for a network marketing company where people would come saying "im going to try it"... Try it?? You got to commit!

Alright... that does it for me, keep them coming!
