Ok, now that i've done too many of these, I have a question: What is the difference between a story and a statement, when you're only using six words? Because I'd be inclined to say something like "he eats his breakfast of eggs" is not a story. Whereas "For sale: Baby shoes, never worn" most definately is.
I think it's about what it implies. In the first one you've got: "Ok, so he's having a breakfast. I guess he's male? And he likes eggs. That's all I'm getting here".
Whereas with Hemingway's, you can keep reading into it, and it's packed with emotion. Plus, it works as a very basic three act structure.
You've got the set-up 'For Sale' "ok, something's being sold, i like buying things, i will read more.
Then what I guess we can call the conflict 'Baby Shoes' "why would someone sell baby shoes? Why do babies even need shoes, it's not like they walk anywhere? Just get socks. This is apparently someone who gives a shit about babies."
Then the climax/resolution 'Never Worn' "ok so the baby for some reason no longer needs shoes. He's dead? He lost his feet? who sells the shoes they bought for their baby anyway? What must that person be going through?"

So what do you guys think? Does anything any of us have thrown out here qualify as a story? Or are we just writing a constrained sentence?

On an other note, did hemingway like dead baby jokes?

Cool

it is written in stone that yes, you have written too goddamn many of these haha...but I think that it all depends on which one we use...some of the ones put up tell great stories while others would result in the MS word paperclip coming up and saying"fragment, consider revision" LOL i hate that lil fucker...

anwyays yea I think that most of the ones here tell great stories, some requiring more thought than others, some not as obvious, and some needing even weeks to comprehend but I think that weve grasped the 6 word storytelling idea pretty well here...i think the way to tell is probably just to think "do these 6 words create questions in my mind, do they make me wonder?, do they elicit reactions/emotions from me?

and thats a difficult one my friend, i would say that he was NOT and that this was a coincidence, but i am basing thissolely on my common sense and my hope that hemmingway wasnt a weirdo...im probably wrong though
