As some of you know I have been mixing music on and off for the last year or so. I have recently got my hands on some gear for digital DJ'ing. I have been a huge fan of the scene since early 2007 when I saw my first festival DJ set and been obsessed since. Since I moved to Uni I had to give up drums because I couldn't bring my kit so I moved to DJ'ing and now starting to produce which is super hard without the right music theory background. This is something that I know I could be good at but just need to practice, learn and educate myself. Just as I did with bodybuilding when I wanted to loose weight.
So I introduce to you my next goal - Musician. This includes these sub-goals:
1. Earn money/ gain a fan base (already started with the fan-base) through DJ'ing for my local university club, local clubs and house parties. Just to fund my productions/distribution and gear.
2. Learn music theory, I am good at rhythms, beats and counting but horrible at scales, chord progressions and other music theory that is very relevant to instruments like the Piano, guitar etc. This probably means I have to take up piano lessons. Never learnt these things because of my drumming background.
3. Do my best to find production tutorials/course that are free or cheap. If need be attend a course on music production. Learn to be a good producer - ties in quite closely with the music theory.
4. Create a brand for myself as an artist - build up my personality to fit the role - this seems like some douchey goal but i'm not talking about becoming a poser. Rather talking about being a good performer: working on stage presence (or booth presence) with the sort of confidence and conviction that paired with my music will push people into a dancing frenzy. I need to be completely congruent with my actions - no one is going to go nuts with a Shy DJ trying to get the crowd going by standing on the booth, but a confident one that portrays the image of having been/seen the craziest parties will. Also working on the cultural side of the art: fashion/multimedia/artworks and stuff.
5. Vastly improve my involvement in the electronic dance music scene - will probably have to follow several music blogs just to keep up with the vast amounts of new music that comes out weekly.
This goal will be much harder than any i've done before as well as the fact that its is a fiercely competitive business/art but the payoff is massive and more importantly the whole process is just so much damn fun.
So to start off I played at my house party the other weekend and had everyone dancing around, I was told previous house parties everyone didn't really dance out or do much more than bob their heads. Several people loved it and came to me in the booth (which was really a door we took off the hinges and put on top of the PA's) asking if they could have a copy of my mix. And most satisfying was seeing people I know who don't normally enjoy dance/electronic music go crazy.
Here is mix of what I'm like:
Audible Chocolate - Audibles - SoundCloud
Im thinking of coming up with a new name as well - Audible Chocolate is nice but its a bit long and doesn't really match the music I play. I was thinking something along the lines of Frenzy or even just my last name 'Craven'
