Sex Dome
Imagine a huge, dome-shaped building filled with 30 small, roofless rooms. Inside each hexagonally shaped compartment is a bed with crisp linen, a whirlpool bath, a shiny flat-screen television and a cabinet filled with an array of sex toys. Projected on to the ceiling of the dome is an explosive laser show or film choreographed to classical music. At the entrance of the dome, you and your partner pay £20 each and go into your own private booth, while other couples do the same in the other rooms. And then you all have sex.
Shared experience
Vince Bugliosi, a 42-year-old doctor from California, came up with this concept five years ago. 'The Method of Shared Erotic Experience sprouted from my love of music choreographed to vivid imagery or film, which is a really powerful art form,' he explains. 'It then occurred to me that sex, one of the most pleasurable of all human experiences, could somehow be tossed into the mix.'
Bugliosi believes this futuristic concept will appeal to all sorts of people because it is a mix of smut and class. 'It would be a whole new genre of entertainment that couples could indulge in alongside nights out at the theatre or cinema,' he explains. 'The world needs something new and different like this. It's ideal for people who may have thought about orgies but are too scared. This is safe and discreet but still a bit dangerous as you can hear other people having sex around you. At the same time, you get a panoramic view of a fantastic show that would be romantic or sexual in theme. The atmosphere would be fantastic.' Bugliosi doesn't take full credit for his idea.

He says his wife Liz, a housewife, came up with some of the softer touches, including the sex toys and the whirlpool bath. His research has led him to believe there is nothing quite like this in the world – the closest thing being Japan's 'love hotels' which offer porn on TV and sex toys in the minibar. All he needs now is an entrepreneur to invest in his pleasure dome. 'We're looking for a risk-taker with money but possibly not one in America as it is very puritanical. We thought London, possibly Soho, might be the appropriate fertile soil.'
What do people think of his idea so far? 'Physician friends of mine have confided that they would give this type of entertainment a spin if it were available,' says Bugliosi.
Even his father, Vincent Bugliosi Snr, the Charles Manson prosecutor and best-selling author of Helter Skelter, believes it could carve out a new niche. 'Although he said he would never try himself,' adds Bugliosi Jr.
A room with a view
Bugliosi has plenty of titillating twists planned for adventurous voyeurs. 'The floor of each cubicle would be underlaid by a hydraulic system similar to the one used by car mechanics,' he explains excitedly. 'When activated, the floor would raise, enabling the couple to see participants in other cubicles who have also done the same.' Or, if you like being watched, you could flick a switch which would allow you to view other couples on your TV while they view you.
Bugliosi is keen to keep the focus of the dome sexual, romantic and entertaining, not a seedy place to get your rocks off. Of course, he still has lots to think about. Hygiene is a big issue but he promises that each compartment would be kept very clean. It's a gruesome thought but, in case you're wondering, all sex toys would be thrown out and replaced after each couple.
For now, Bugliosi sits and waits for his pot of gold to arrive. 'Almost 40 years ago, the world-renowned scholar Alvin Toffler said that the men and women of tomorrow “will be capable of playing in ways never dreamed of before. They will play strange sexual games”,' says Bugliosi. 'I would say the time might be ripe.'
