Its about time this thread got revamped people have been given time to read up on stuff if that has been suggested. I have been gathering a big collection of books that I want to read as soon I will be going to Philippines for 3 months living in a small beach with no internet and I want to gather a good collection of books to help me think and nurture my intelligence, also keep me entertained.

I have always been a fan of Wilbur Smith Author of a lot of adventure novels. Mostly based around ancient egypt, colonial exploration times and early south Africa. They are interesting reads as most involve a lot of wars, sex and young men growing into powerful people. Which suits this forum quite well. Anyway I suggest River God as a start to his work.

Other Authors I am going to read into include:

Philip K. Dick's work - He is the mind behind great films based on his books like: Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly and Minority Report.

There is also Charles Bukowski who is the author the TV Character Hank Moody is based off!

This book is more about professional development, but it's very useful when you need to give a presentation either for academic purposes, or if you need to present information to your bosses.

It's not written in overly complicated language so very easy to read and apply the knowledge, and has a very laid back tone throughout. It has some relevance as well, with how the English won their bid on the 2012 summer Olympics.

The author Jon Steel is an advertising guru, who was responsible for the Got Milk? Campaign.

THE BEST PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT BOOK I'VE READ SO FAR (Buy here) (Buy here)
Stephen Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective People is so much wisdom into one book. The book goes beyond than what title suggests. So much more. It's not even funny how profound this book is. So yeah, take my advise and buy it. It will change your life.

Buy the book here:

Oh yes my friend it is, and I actually began reading " The 7 habits of Highly Effective People" a while back. It was a tad boring, and it could have been that at 13 I was not ready for the knowledge that is in that book. I will give another go after I'm done with Shantaram and one more book I want to read which is "My Booky Wook" by Russell Brand which I must say a have a man crush on. He is such a cheeky bastard that makes me all warm and moist every time he use his linguistic powers.

I'd like to share this amazing book i read called "what every body is saying: an FBI agents guide to speed reading people" by Joe Navarro. It covers everything from dominant to submissive body language, as well as the expression of positive and negative emotions from head to toe. He not only describes this in detail, but he does it so elequently, and shares examples where this knowledge has been applied.

Here is an extract from the book:

"It is my hope that through an understanding of nonverbal behavior,
you will achieve a deeper, more meaningful view of the world around
you—able to hear and see the two languages, spoken and silent, that
combine to present the full, rich tapestry of human experience in all of its
delightful complexity. This is a goal well worth pursuing, and one that
with effort I know you can achieve. You now possess something power-
ful. You possess knowledge that will enrich your interpersonal relation-
ships for the rest of your life. Enjoy knowing what every body is saying,
for to that end I have dedicated myself and this book."

I highly recommend this book to everyone

Mitch

If you're looking for some novels...

The Road by Cormac McCarthy (coming to theaters as a major motion picture very soon)
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Crime and Punishment by Fyodyr Dostoyevsky (I definitely spelled his last name wrong)
Chesapeake by James Michener(sp?)
