Its a numbers game.
I worked in sales for about a year to 6 months, it just all depends how you look at it. Now if there is something that really helped me get out of my shell and expose myself to been uncomfortable was sales. Not only is this one of the most rewarding jobs in the economical sense, but it can also provide a great way to interact with different people. I stopped doing sales for a couple of reasons, and one of them was the fact that I always wanted to "close" people; every time I introduced the product, and got them hooked, I would get fixated on selling the product with out realizing what the customer was trying to communicate via body language, words, and feelings. It came to a point were I would listen to CD's on how to close almost every day and I would not close any one. So I just gave up and moved on. After about 2 years away from sales, my dad told me something that just clicked in me (He also told me at the right moment since I've heard that sentence before plenty of times. He just said it in a moment were I was LISTENING). This is what he said-" Sales is a numbers game"- and he is absolutely correct, it's said that you need to talk to 100 people to get 10 interested, and out of those 10 only one will really want what you offer. Not that it was wrong for me to push myself to close every single person, but I was letting the lack of success get to me. But now I can see that letting my ego and greed get to me was the wrong idea since it was not letting me listen to natural structure of sales. This does not mean you can't changes this numbers, the right education and state of mind can increase your probability of closing, you just got to keep your motivation to improve at a high level. All this got me thinking of anything in life was also influence by numbers. So maybe every 3 out of 10 girls you talk to will find you attractive, or maybe every 6 out of 10 attempts to get a rise gets denied, and maybe 5 out 20 times you keep up with your goals. Maybe 4 of the girls really liked you but didn't want a relationship and 3 of them were having a horrible day, 2 out of the times you asked for a rise your boss may have had problems and the other 2 he just really didn't see why the heck you would ask for the rise. The important thing is that you stepped up, exposed yourself and took action to change your world.
So if you want to attack the sales industry just remember one thing-" sales is a numbers game" and if 1 person didn't buy it the next may be looking for what you are offering.
I wrote this pretty tired so I'll look it up later to see if it needs corrections.
